Tempo time

The CNN clock read 96 degrees when we got to the park last night. I guess August wanted to go out with a bang!

These cool kids got together last night for some tempo runs. Speedwork + crazy heat + increasing humidity = not fun for any one.

We did tempo runs once before, but this time the formula was slightly different. We had to run two 1.7 mile loops at 75%, or what I might call “race pace,” with only 45 seconds to rest in between. Last time, we just did one 1.7 loop at race pace and then another doing intervals, which is easier on the body because there’s a lot more rest.

So. I wasn’t sure what I could do, especially in the heat. I didn’t want to go out too hard or fast, because 3.4 miles is a long way in 96 degrees, and burning out before the run was done would be really painful.

I ended up falling in step with my running buddy, as usual. We managed to chat a bit, but we were both really heaving. By the time we finished the first lap, we were dripping in sweat. Our time was 14:53 (last time I did the lap in 14:08, but that was when I knew I only had to do one).

We set out on the second lap a bit slower, and pushed through as hard as we could – though probably not at race pace. As we neared the end, all we could do was exchange breathy “I’m dying”s back and forth. But then we crossed the finish line, and our time was …

… 14:55! Almost exactly the same as the first lap?! We were shocked to say the least. And feeling pretty awesome. That means that our super steady pace throughout was 8:45. Not bad at all.

We did one more cool down lap, stretched, and called it a day. It was nice to be able to chat with teammates. I must confess, though, that I was a bit bummed to see that once again only 2 of the 9 people at the run were new Team R2R members – it was mostly people who ran last year. And even though I love 2009 Team R2R like crazy, it would be so nice to see some more new faces on our runs. Where are you guys? Please come meet us. You’ll have so much fun. And you’ll find someone right at your pace, so don’t worry if you think you’re too fast or too slow.

Also, where are the dudes? Poor Chuck, always running with a gaggle of women.
