It’s that special time of year!

I’m doing another juice cleanse. This time I’m back to all juice (rather than juice til dinner) – I just didn’t think the dinner was worth the trouble.

I’m doing it, like before, to kick start a new season of health. I’d call it my semi-annual “flush.” It’s much needed after a looooong winter of comfort food.

I started this morning with a green juice. Contrary to popular belief, it is delicious! (Last night when I was walking home with the box of juice, a random stranger told me that she’d tried BPC but hated it because she thought the juices were disgusting. Insane! They are so good!)

I took three more juices into work in my handy little lunch sack. Precious.

Pineapple-mint-apple (which is insanely delicious – I’m having it now!), another green juice, and spicy lemonade.

New this year: nutrition labels. Interesting additional information.

Also new (for me) this year: I’m planning on keeping up my normal gym routine while I’m juicing. I have a run scheduled for tonight, tomorrow morning I have a session with Chuck’s trainer, and Thursday evening is our usual weekly group run. I think that will all be fine. (If it comes to it, BPC recommends eating some avocado or cucumber.)

That said, last night I had a terrible time at the gym because I felt SO hungry! I ate normally yesterday and even had some extra almonds (okay they were cinnamon and sugar coated almonds but they were delicious) before I left for the gym, but when I got there my hands were shaking! I KNOW it was totally psychological, in anticipation of not being able to eat for three days, but it was bad. I tried to force myself to run; I only made it through two miles. It was pretty awful.

Today is a new day, though, and two juices in, I’m feeling pretty great. I have to do a tempo run tonight, which scares me a little, but it’s good, too, as it’s a fixed time rather than distance.

Have you ever done a juice cleanse? Which one? How did you like it?

  1. I always seem to cheat on my juice cleanses, I’m so much more of a smoothie girl. That being said, as I have incorporated more juice into my diet over the last couple of years, I have been tempted to check out BP again this Spring. Hmm, tempting.

    • I never cheat bc they are so expensive, I want to be sure to get my money’s worth! 🙂 I really do think the BPC juices are delicious, though – and I’m pretty sure you can buy them individually now (without committing to a cleanse). good luck!

  2. I am done the BPC cleanse before and I LOVE it. The only drawback is how expensive it is, but it does deter me from cheating! The juices are so delish and I feel like they give me so much energy. I like to do hot yoga for exercise over running during the cleanse because I feel like the sweat is extra detoxifying. Starbucks iced green tea unsweetened is also my go-to drink during the cleanse before workouts for an extra pick me up.

    • agree! I feel super fresh and alert today! the cost IS a drawback, but I tell myself that one fresh pressed juice is $6-8 anywhere, and that would add up to more than I’m paying for the package.

I will try the starbucks! I’ve been drinking hot green tea at my desk but I’ve been sweetening it with stevia – is that cheating?! (I know there’s some lactose in stevia but it must be really minimal…)

  3. I started mine yesterday! Since a friend and I committed together, but the pick up option was no longer available when I tried to buy after my friend had already purchased, I had to do a makeshift version with the juices available at whole foods! I made my own cashew milk from the recipe in the book but actually only had a SIP of it last night, so only had five juices yesterday, as the day got away from me. Trying to fit in all six today! I don’t love the green but today it tasted better, actually.
    Good luck!

I love not being distracted by when I am going to eat. And I had a great time at spin last night and still felt high energy.

    • I am so impressed that you made your own cashew milk! amazing! and I agree that it’s nice not to have to worry about what to eat – kind of like wearing a school uniform – it gets monotonous but it’s awfully convenient.

good luck with the rest of your cleanse! can’t wait to hear about it!

      • Thanks! I found it hilarious all the stores I made it to (and found the items I needed at!) on Sunday… especially as someone who never cooks and didn’t even know where the vanilla extract was in my local grocery store. On another note love that you signed up for all of those races when the one was sold out, good planning! Great blog.

      • thanks! maybe we’ll see each other at a race some time 🙂

  4. […] way than the average one of us is used to having them. It’s also been fun to read other blog posts/Twitter comments/Social Workout Challenge commentary on it! Anyone else doing a juice cleanse right […]

  5. I stumbled upon your blog after reading your post on Carrots N Cake about cleanses. I am so glad I am not the only one who enjoys them!

In my brain, I KNOW it sounds crazy — how could you feel good without eating? But I gave it a try, and after a few days I couldn’t believe how great I felt — lots of energy, great sleep, clear skin. I think that the occasional cleanse can be a good thing (assuming you do it for the right reasons). I feel like it keeps my body humming along!

I have done MasterCleanse, which is pretty boring — BPC looks great. Maybe I’ll give that a shot later this year.

Thanks for sharing! I’m glad I found your blog and I’m looking forward to reading up 🙂

    • ah, it’s so nice to hear from someone else who has done it and gets it! I was a little disappointed that all of those carrots n cake comments were so disparaging but no one had even tried it. I love that it “keeps your body humming” – that is such a good way to describe it!

how long did you do the Master Cleanse for? it’s just spicy lemonade, right? I’d imagine that gets boring fast – I’d definitely recommend BPC. There’s a lot of variety and the juices really are good.

I’m catching up on your blog too now 🙂 thanks for being in touch!

      • Thanks! I think this falls under the category of “don’t knock it til you try it”. On paper it doesn’t make sense, but when you actually try it you realize it feels kind of amazing!

Yes, MC is just the spicy lemonade — it does get boring, but it also makes grocery shopping super easy 😉 The first time I did it was for 15 days. I kind of didn’t want to stop, but I felt like a) I missed the feel and taste of food/chewing and b) that just seemed like long enough. The MC book recommends 10 or 21 days, so I kind of found a happy medium. The effects last for a long time, and I felt like it was easy to go back to healthy eating/lots of exercise.

I’ll probably post about my MC experience soon — I think that I learned some lessons about eating, energy level, etc that I can incorporate into everyday life. And I’ll definitely think about the BPC in the future!

  6. I’ll be really interested to read your MC review! 15 days is incredible – I’m not sure I could go that long. I guess it all depends though. the hardest part for me this time was that I read lots of food blogs and it was hard to know that I couldn’t have any of that stuff for three days! but in the end, it’s also a really good lesson in restraint and reason – I mean, yes, it’s a little annoying, but in the end I should be able to manage just about anything for only 3 days.
